But First, Coffee

But First, Coffee

If there is one thing you do not want to screw up while adventuring it is your caffeine intake! We’re talking coffee. That rich, steamy, arousing, chocolate-brown liquid is a morning must have. It took us months of trial and error to finally concoct the perfect brew while on the road. But alas! We have done it, and I’m going to tell you the secret!

Jason is the brew master.

Our coffee experiments started with instant coffee. Boil water on the stove, dump the little dirt packet into your mug, add hot water, stir, sip, and scour with disappointment. Often the coffee would not fully dissolve, it felt weak, super bitter, and the overall texture was off. I don’t know about you, but we like it when our coffee has some “body” to it. The only instant coffee that was worthwhile was the Starbucks brand, which is overpriced and the serving size felt off. We’d want two packets a morning, this meant blowing through a box in two days. Not sustainable. We knew we could do better. I should disclaim that we are not crazy coffee snobs. We know what we like the taste of, but we’re not looking at beans under a microscope.

Meanwhile, we discovered Laird Superfood Creamer. My husband likes his coffee as sweet as can be. Maintaining an ice box for milk-like products was getting really annoying while adventuring across the country in the summer months, so this discovery was elating. Laird Hamilton is a professional surfer who was looking for that healthy extra boost while out slashing big waves. His creamer comes in powder form and is an all-natural blend of whole-food ingredients including a full range of MCTs– healthy fueling fats. To add that sweet pop Laird uses organic maple sugar and real vanilla. It’s perfect. No additional sugar needed– even for the sweet-toothed man in my life.

Alright, so one part of the coffee equation was figured out, we now had a no-refrigeration-needed flavor enhancer. Back to brewing– next we thought we’d try a percolator. This was undoubtedly better than the instant coffee and we could experiment with so many different roasts. I honestly have grown quite fond of the Whole Foods brand Pacific Rim Vienna organic coffee. Our percolator produced a strong, bold, cup o’ Joe. It was really messy though… all of those uncontained coffee grounds. When you’re getting antsy to hit the trails for a run, cleaning the percolator is the last thing you’re thinking about. This was still the best camp coffee solution until…

KUJU COFFEE…

Since discovering Kuju Coffee, our percolator’s purpose is no longer to percolate. Whomp… whomp.

Kuju makes single-serve pour over coffee. The company debuted in 2016 thanks to two Eagle Scout brothers that were sick of instant coffee while camping. (I’m glad we’re not the only duo that came to that consensus.) The product is ethically sourced, organic, fair trade certified, made with wind power, supports 1% for the Planet… AND tastes delicious. Seriously, what more could you want?! The design is truly brilliant. Kuju’s medium roast Basecamp Blend with notes of honey, oak, and chocolate, warms my soul.

There you have it! The best coffee when waking up in your human habitat is Kuju Coffee paired with a scoop of Laird Superfood Creamer. Guaranteed to charge you up for whatever epic adventure your day brings.

If you’re not in a hurry to consume your coffee, I suggest a thermos to keep every sip nice and steamy.
