Tell us a little about yourself and why you own a TAXA?
WE LOVE CAMPING! We've car camped since we were married (about 15 years). Weekend trips turned into long road trips, and we wanted to streamline our step-up to spend more time hiking and exploring. While we had great camping equipment, we tried everything to make our setup simple. Melissa had the kitchen dialed into one box, and Matt was always playing Tetris with our roof rack box, making all our gear fit. We would always scout fellow campers' setups to see how they camped, but nothing ever appealed to our eyes. Everything was either too big (limiting our adventure opportunities), or it was out of our price range.
Enter the TAXA Woolly Bear! We bought one sight unseen because we knew it was perfect for what we needed. After seeing it in person at the Overland Expo in CO, we knew we had chosen the ideal habitat for us. It is towable with our car, off-road capable, can easily carry our RTT, contains lots of storage for camping gear, paddleboards, AND it has a kitchen! It checked all the boxes for us.
Now we spend less time setting up and more time exploring. This year we hope to expand our adventures through overlanding.
Where is your favorite place to take your TAXA?
That's a tough one, if we had to pick just one it would have to be Mount Rainier. We love the views, the rivers and the beautiful trees that make it a wonderland.
Who do you explore with?
With our two boys, Owen and Cade.
What are your favorite outdoor activities?
We all love to hike. In the boys' early years, it took a little more bribery (cookies) to get them to hike, but now it's more about exploring the trail to see what animals or unique rocks they can find. Matt is a biker; he rides to work every day, but we all love to hit the local trails to bike on the weekends. The boys love skipping rocks in any river they can find; this is their favorite activity when they're not fishing. And lastly, photography, that's where you'll find Melissa, behind the lens documenting all our trips.
Do you have any hacks or mods that you've done to your habitat to enhance your travels?
Yes, we have done a few upgrades to our Woolly Bear to prepare for our extended travels. First, we upgraded the lift jack to handle rougher terrain. The Arc 500 series has really been an asset to us as we move Wonder around to find leveler spots. Secondly, we upgraded the battery box. We wanted to go with a lithium battery, so we changed the battery box to accommodate it. The RV Lock Box was a perfect addition to the tongue of the trailer. It is light, matches our habitat, stores our lithium battery, and has a shore power connection too.
Tell us your favorite unique habitat story.
The funny looks and the curious questions we receive. Whether we're set up at camp or on the road, we frequently have a few onlookers who are trying to figure out just what our habitat is. We always enjoy the conversations that follow.
What's one place you'd love to explore?
Alaska and British Columbia are on our must do list! We hope in the next few years that we will be able to spend a whole summer exploring these beautiful destinations.
I can't leave home without my...
Home roasted coffee, Biolite stove and lights, Dometic cooler and of course our camera. We're always documenting our adventures!
